On July 7th, the historic Tower of Power officially began its beginning as a state of the art educational institution in Ward 7. The Howard D. Woodson Class of 2010 will have the best facilities in the history of District of Columbia Public Schools.
On July 1, Councilmember Alexander presented the Lady Warriors of Howard D. Woodson High School a Ceremonial Resolution honoring their championship season. Members of the team and coach staff lead by Frank Oliver were present to receive the proclamation.
On June 20, 2008 Councilmember Alexander, joined by Chairman Vincent Gray and At-Large Councilmembers Kwame Brown and David Catania, dedicated the Benning Road Bridge located at Benning Road and Minnesota Avenue to Lorraine Whitlock. The naming of this bridge is a permanent memorial to a popular Ward 7 heroine, a political activist and social educator. The family of the late Lorraine Whitlock was on hand for the presentation and naming. Councilmember Alexander presented the family with a plaque to commemorate the naming and bridge dedication. Over 75 community members were present at the ceremony.
On Wednesday, May 14 my office in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Department and DC Superior Courts gathered to discuss crime in our communities. Over 300 community members were in attendance, and we received instantaneously response from our inactive community surveys. The purpose of the event was to provide residents of Ward 7 an opportunity to share their views and concerns about community issues, crime, and criminal justice with their Council representative, judges, police officers and other government officials. Residents heard from myself, MPD Police Assistant Chief Groomes, MPD Sixth District Commander Robert Contee, Judge Ann O’ Regan Keary, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court’s Criminal Division, Judge Craig Iscoe, Presiding Judge of the East of the River Community Court, Magistrate Judge Michael McCarthy, Presiding Judge, DC Misdemeanor and Traffic Community Court, Judge Anita Josey-Herring, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court’s Family Court, Jeffrey A. Taylor, United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Adrienne Poteat, Deputy Director, Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, and Constance B. Woody, Treasurer, Sixth District Citizens Advisory Council. On September 30th over a thousand community member joined Councilmember Alexander, City Interest and merchants at East River Park Shopping Center to honor loyal and daily shoppers of the center located at Minnesota and Benning Road.
