On November 28, the non-profit Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena held a press conference to announce that Neal Henderson will serve as the director of the arena’s youth hockey program. Under his leadership, Henderson’s team, the Cannons, made up primarily of youths from Wards 7 and 8, will unite with Kids on Ice to form a unified hockey program. Kids on Ice is a program conducted by the arena that provides free hockey and figure-skating classes to the public.

“I am so glad that the children of our community will be awarded such a wonderful opportunity,” said Councilmember Yvette M. Alexander. “This arena provides a number of great programs for our young hockey players and I’m glad to see it continues to prosper.”

The merger will offer players more practice time on the ice and give the nonprofit group, which has been running programs at the rink for 15 years, more leverage when applying for funding. In order to help fund the collaboration, the Washington Capitals donated $45,000 and the National Hockey League donated $7,500 to the program.  Councilmember Alexander, Coach Neal Henderson, Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward and NHL Network analyst and NHL alumnus Kevin Weekes were in attendance along with the Cannons hockey team members.
