Alexander Bio
The Honorable Yvette M. Alexander has been a member of the Council of the District of Columbia since 2007. She chairs the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs and is a member of the committees on Economic Development; Health; Human Services and Public Works, Transportation and Environment.
She is responsible for the oversight of regulatory agencies, which includes the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs; Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking and Public Service Commission, which regulates public utilities.
Councilmember Alexander began her professional career in management with United Airlines. After several years in the insurance industry, she became an insurance regulator with the District of Columbia government. As a legislator she has introduced several measures primarily impacting her district with improvements in the areas of economic development, health, education, public safety, social services and environmental and regulatory issues.
Councilmember Alexander holds a Bachelor’s degree from Howard University’s School of Business and Public Administration. She serves as a board member for The Washington Tennis and Education Foundation and the Take Charge Program, a juvenile diversion and gang prevention program.

Award recipient, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and the Louisiana Insurance Department for her efforts in New Orleans, LA assisting residents who were affected by the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
President of the DC Chapter of the International Black Women’s Congress
Host, the Washington DC historical tour for the Prairie View University Criminal Justice Department’s, Youth Outreach Program and has been honored for her service and commitment to the program.
